History

Jardine Shipping Services has been providing shipping services in Asia, first as a ship operator and more recently as a shipping agency and services provider, since 1832, and is the oldest business within Jardine Matheson Group.

Originally founded as a shipping and trading company sailing along the China coast and within Asia, Jardines expanded into longer international routes in the 1950s, when it started to serve other foreign liner and tramp principals.

In the 1970s the business expanded its agency business into South East Asia and the Philippines, subsequently setting up its own offices throughout China and Vietnam in the early 1990s. Two joint-ventures, with Sinotrans and Sunisco, have since been established, giving Jardine Shipping Services significant strength in the strategically-important ports of Shanghai and along the Southern China Coast.
